What Windows?  9x/ME doesn't count.  Windows may also contain some
chip-specific bug work-arounds;  Windows actually contains lots of
those.

If you have an old enough boot media to have a 2.2.x kernel it would be
interesting to see if that would boot.  I had an odd-ball white box
machine that would run 2.2.x like a rock, but just went jiggy under
2.4.x (my solution involved a heave-ho and a dumpster).
