Well, I finally got my laptop back from the warranty repair people (new
keyboard, new display, new hard disk - very nice)....

But the selection of distributions to currently install, pending the
release of SuSe 9.1 (9.0 *SUCKS* and RedHat 9 is end-of-life'd) is
pretty dismal. And SuSe 9.1 is just "hope". So I just installed Fedora
Core 1 and all the requisite updates. Everything "works", networking,
etc... all very painless.

But GAWD ALMIGHTY IS THIS ONE UGLY STEP CHILD. Compared to RH9/XD2 the
fonts look like the day old floor sweepings of a rendering plant. And
OpenOffice, nor X, has Thorndale (WTF!!!), so the default body text of
all OO documents is just plain hideous. There isn't even an entry for
Thorndale in the font translation table! What *(@^&*RY E&*@&*R*(@R(@)
@*&$&*(@ D(*@^%&^@)R)*#@ dimwitted morons are at the helm of this
disaster? I haven't seen an X display look this AWFUL in
***YEARS***!!!!!!!!! Does someone have a retro-fetish for RedHat 6.2?

So am I just spoiled by Ximian (in which case I'm going running back to
RH9 supported or not, because this is ludicrous) or is there some
obscure package to install or bit to twiddle that will make the fonts
not look like just so much splattered baby vomit?
