Right, you don't want to do that.

Yes, you can boot from a floppy or a rescue CD and run fsck.
(I'd use a rescue CD personally).  Make sure whatever you use is recent
enough to have ext3 support.

Otherwise, you may be able to boot into single user mode (if you can
boot that far), make sure the partition is mounted read-only, and run
fsck.
