That's usually what I do because it's easiest -- type "linux single"
or "whatever single" at your LILO prompt.  This works better if you
have all your important directories as separate filesystems (/usr,
/var, /tmp, /home), because you can boot into single user mode,
umount everything but /, and then fsck everything.  Your / should be
mounted readonly and you should be able to fsck that too -- but if
everything important is on other filesystems, it probably won't
matter since / will rarely be written to and thus probably won't
have anything broken that fsck needs to fix.
