So far as I know, the stock kernel module install creates a directory
(or overwrites) in /lib/modules with the exact name of the kernel.
That's how the kernel knows where to look. Those are the only files or
dirs in /lib/modules on Gentoo or Debian, IIRC.

So you can have dirs in there named 2.4.19-ihatecompilingnewkernels-1.
