Here seems to be the problem. On every howto I find it says to create
/etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf and add in the mechanism line there. Now in
the postfix book from oreilly it says that the smtpd.conf file should be
in /usr/local/lib/sasl2/ folder. It seems that I am getting the auth
mechanism error because postfix is not finding the smtpd.conf file, but
I can't figure out how to point it to it.
