[KLUG Members] chmod query

I've got an external HDD with a FAT32 partition and a NTFS partition.
I'm trying to access files on the FAT32 partition from Mandrake 10.

The partition is mounted as /mnt/maxtorFAT.
Its permissions are drwxr--r--.

I log on as root and try to change the permissions. I get no error
message when I hit return, but the permissions don't change:

chmod o+w /mnt/maxtorFAT

Likewise I can't go in and change permissions on the files.
