I've not noticed programming on Linux to actually be much different than
programming on other platforms,  except maybe for low-level stuff written in
C.

Applications should be using abstraction layers to pull further away from the
platform (conceptually): such as Qt/GTK, ODBC, etc...  Or just use a language
that is in itself an abstraction layer: Java or .NET
