Upcoming on 2004-10-19
----------------------
Dirk Bartley on Cups - The new standard in open source printing

Tonight Dirk will discuss implementing cups. What challenges can arise,
some of the advantages of cups over LPRng and how to configure and
customize this flexible printing daemon.

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems administrator for
Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division of Schupan and Sons. His passion for
free software comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an Upper
Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their sheltie/terrier mix pound
pooch, for a walk. These interests are only followed by his love of
playing ice hockey.

-------------------

CUPS has been an often requested topic. You ask and KLUG delivers!
KLUG needs your feedback and requests in order to meet the needs of our
membership. We are ALWAYS open to your suggestions and comments. You
can e-mail programdirector at kalamazoolinux.org OR join our speakers@
mailing list to discuss meetings, possible topics, event ideas, etc...
You do NOT need to be a speaker/presenter to join the speakers@ list;
the speakers@ list is to gather YOUR ideas, suggestions, and feedback.

And based upon requests and suggestions made on the speakers list....

The LDAP Series
-------------------
2004-10-12 - LDAP101: An Introduction To LDAP

LDAP is a technology well on its way to becoming as pervasive as the web
itself. LDAP is the basis for Microsoft's Active Directory, Novell's
E-Directory, as well as several similar products from IBM & Sun. LDAP is
also supported by a vast array of applications from Eudora to Open
Office to the basic Windows Address Book. Understanding LDAP is
fundamental to administering a modern medium to large network. Not to
mention that LDAP is also just 'really cool'. Tonight will be a generic
introduction to LDAP: What is LDAP? The DSA, the data model, and basic
concepts.

2004-11-16 - LDAP102: Building An OpenLDAP DSA

Now that we've covered basic LDAP concepts in LDAP101, tonight will
cover building, installing, configuring, and securing an OpenLDAP DSA.
How to use the OpenLDAP utilities, migrating existing flat files to
LDAP, setting up LDAP authentication in PAM, backing up your Dit
(Directory Information Tree), and replicating your Dit for redundancy.

2004-12-14 - LDAP103: Using LDAP for service authentication

Now that you have a running DSA on your network (as of LDAP102!) you
probably want to do more with it. Tonight we will cover using LDAP as
the authentication subsystem for a variety of applications: PAM, Apache,
Squid, OpenGroupware, and SASL (Cyrus IMAPd, Sendmail, etc...) You can
have one username with one password for ALL services!

2005-02-22 - LDAP104: Constructing a directory enabled mail service

Probably the second application to be integrated into your directory
service will be mail, authentication being the first. By integrating
your mail servers* with LDAP would create a highly robust and flexible
system for supporting the Internets single most important application:
electronic mail. You can have all your mail routes, black lists, rules,
and aliases in your LDAP Dit, and control you mail service without
resorting to shell access. *(sendmail for SMTP, and Cyrus IMAP as the
store provider will be assumed for sake of the presentation, but all
these concepts are universally applicable)

2005-03-15 - LDAP105: LDAP Clients

So you have a working LDAP DSA? Now you want to get the data. This
presentation will provide a survey of the best LDAP clients as well as
how to configure various popular clients (Outlook, OOo, WAP, Evolution,
etc...) to best utilize your directory services.

2005-04-12 - LDAP106: OpenLDAP Administration & Advanced Topics

OpenLDAP provides a great many features for tuning performance and
redundancy. Various backends such as ldap and meta allow you to
construct custom views of directory data. This presentation will dig
into the deep secrets of managing and utilizing an OpenLDAP DSA.

2005-05-10 - LDAP107: Building A Federated Directory

The flexibility of LDAP and the OpenLDAP DSA make it possible to build a
'federated' directory: a directory that brings all your datasources
together. Include data from other DSAs, automatically discover other
DSAs using DNS SRV records, and proving data to LDAP clients from
traditional SQL relational database systems. OpenLDAP can also be used
as the backend for core network services like DNS & DHCP. Your Dit can
become a one-stop-shop for all your administrator's and user's basic
information needs.

Want to present? But not sure about the details, check out our
"Speaker Guidelines"

-----------------

Speaker Guidelines

1. Presentations should be 30~90 minutes in length. Length of 120
minutes for advanced topics is allowed, but please notify the program
director of your intention to run long.
2. There is typically time after the presentation proper for one on one
conversations with members of the audience. The meetings close around
9:15 - 9:30pm.
3. KLUG can provide an SVGA projector that works with most computers.
The projectors native resolution is 1024x768x16bit, but it will work,
with some negligable loss of quality, at 800x600. We have had very good
luck with compatibility but we cannot GUARANTEE compatibility.
4. Please consider that the meeting room is quite large, if your going
to display text/examples, please plan ahead to use a LARGE and CRISP
font.
5. Presenters should provide a title, one paragraph bio, and one
paragraph topic description for inclusion on the KLUG schedule page.
Please provide these in plain text.
6. It is appreciated when presenters can provide their presentations (in
some open format), notes, or other content for inclusion on the KLUG
past presentations page.
7. Internet access is available, both RJ-45 and wireless, at the
facility. But KLUG cannot guarantee it's functionality at any given
time. Presenters are advised to avoid reliance on external resources
when possible.
8. Internet access requires a web browser with Javascript and pop-ups
enabled.
