Not much specific to add to this, but I tire of vendors being "helpful"
without providing the switches required to turn the "help" off when it's
not warranted. Of late I've become enamored of lines like:
route del -net 169.254.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0
in rc.local, whenever I set up a system. You can tell I've been doing
rather too much of the above, as that linewas typed from memory :)
I don't use .local as a LAN TLD, but there's no reason why a distro
must co-opt that (or anything). If they want to provide that as a
service, a clearly documented and defined method of turning it off is
really nessesary.
It is only with a kind of monopolistic arrogance that these kinds of
services are provided woithout recourse, saince they imply that they
are in fact standards, and that only distro-homogeneous networks are
acceptable.
