I'm still unclear as to the conceptual relationship between IM and GW.   Other
than storing the IM iD in the GW's contact store, how are the two related?
(Just asking because lots of people imply they are, but I don't see how IM is
anymore related to GW that e-mail is).

[ IM = Instant Messaging (of any variety), GW = Groupware (of any flavor) ]

You mean SLOX (SuSe's groupware package)?  OpenExchange is SLOX minus lots of
the admin goodies and connectors,  I think you'll find it to be only the
beginnings of a solution.  And the future of SLOX smells iffy;  will Novell
support SLOX and Groupwise (I'm not saying they won't, but....).  And SLOX is
still relying on some old components like Samba 2.2.x so you really don't want
to use the DC functionality, etc...
