Or, if your writing a client side app, just use ODBC.  And then they can
even use M$-SQL if they have a masochistic streak.  Or .NET offers ADO,
or GNOME offer GDA both offer lots of advantages to using the direct-API
approach (they can do widget<->data binding, data dictionary, etc...).
