It isn't about scale, just sanity.  IMAP keeps the mail on the server, 
where it can be backed up (much more easily), searched & sorted (faster, 
usually), and accessed from multple clients (even simultaneously).  All 
these are benefits even for a lone user.

A recent SuSe distro should be working pretty much out of the box with 
Postfix (or sendmail if you want) and Cyrus IMAP (which can also do POP if 
you want).
