I just had exactly this same problem with a laptop running SUSE 9.1.

This was the solution I arrived at.

go to a console i.e. Crtl+Alt+F1, F2, F3...
log in as root then do

ifdown eth0
ifdown eth1
ifup eth1

You should now be able to use the card.  You will have to do this
everytime.  What happens is everything is trying to use eth0 even though
there is no connection there.
