[KLUG Members] copier toner

I've got a Canon  PC 310 copier that needs toner. My question is whether it
is safe to buy reconditioned toner cartridges and, if so, if some sources
are more reliable than others? A new cartridge would cost more than a
replacement copier (though the new copier would probably come with a smaller
supply of toner).  In other words, are there any quality standards for
toner, so one doesn't gunk up the copier or have copies that aren't stable?
