This is an example of where some additional utilities need to be
written to streamline some things that are fairly easy in Windows. 
For example, in Windows there is a program (one of several) called
BackupMyPC that will backup to CD, DVD, or tape.  If you are going to
CD or DVD and the information is larger than a single media item (CD,
DVD, etc) will hold, it automatically will span across multiple media
items.  All you need to do is click a single checkbox to enable
spanning.  It is a $59 program that is very easy and intuitive to
use.  Although tar and split work, they are not easy nor are they
intuitive.  It is nice to have the power and utilities to do stuff
like this but for wider acceptance there needs to be more programs
available to "front-end" this functionality.
