I don't see any merit in attaching 'Europe loves Linux' and referencing
a supercomputer article; these supercomputer projects reflect an
extremely small niche of computer users, most (I'd say 99.9999%) of the
general population is unaware that these systems (or even the agencies
that use them) even exist.

But you're right besides. We've been shopping for ERP systems to
replace our current business system (oh, what a headache that is) and
all but one European originated system runs on Linux and most are in
some part 'Open Source'. It is very encouraging. And European software
is generally more complete, has better documentation, and VASTLY better
educated and more sociable support staff.
