That is true of most MUA's (like mutt).  If you need a MUA with a
builtin MTA, check out "nail":  http://nail.sourceforge.net/
Nail supports SMTP to send messages directly.  It's great for sending
email from shell scripts, etc.

fetchmail is not a MTA.

Sendmail had the reputation for being insecure decades ago, and it's
still hard to get rid of the old stigma.  However I can say that hasn't
been the case for years.

But no matter what MTA you use, you should be keep up on updates,
because it's possible a new hole could be discovered in any program.
