[KLUG Members] Where to send read email

I'm missing something here.  Using Suse 9.2 and Evolution mail as my
mail client.
After I read an email, I like to just delete it from the inbox and have
it go quietly off to another folder, usually the trash box and stay
there until I delete them once a month.  Mine doesn't do that.  When I
delete a message from the inbox, it goes to never never land and I never
see it again. Should I be doing something else rather than DELETE to
accomplish this? 
BTW, isn't "trash" intended for another use?
