[KLUG Members] disappearing hdc

I've been playing with Gentoo recently, and I've discovered something 
very wrong with it.  Each time I boot, the special files /dev/hdc and 
/dev/hdd, which correspond to my optical drives, vanish.  The kernel 
detects them at bootup, but by the time the system is booted they aren't 
there.  hdc1-30 and hdd1-30 are there, but the 3-letter files aren't.  I 
can recreate them with mknod, and everything works, but they disappear 
again at the next boot.  I'm using udev, which I suspect is the culprit 
here, but I have no idea how to fix it.  Anybody ever seen this?
