Nope, VMware workstation is a solid investment.

Creating a VM instance for long-term use in vmware-player with
vmware-demo is clearly a violation of the vmware-demo eula.

Yep, it should flow both ways.  And $200 is not significant,  a great
many people spend almost half that much every month for cable
television.
