I played with gphoto and a Canon EOS digital.  It worked, but just 
barely, and a click at the wrong time would bring the program crashing 
down.  Gphoto is a noble effort, but I don't think it actually works 
very well.  If the camera doesn't show itself to USB as a standard USB 
mass storage device, you're probably better off getting a USB card 
reader like other posts have suggested.  For the stuff that's in 
internal camera memory, can the camera move them to the SD card?
