I don't recommend this.  It's easier to just arrange things to boot
from /dev/md0 (even if /dev/md0 is a raid1 boot partition). This keeps
the system up, booting, and running while you arrange for a spare,
instead of scrambling to get the system running again.  I've done this
about half a dozen times - and customers are very thankful.
