You'll have to play with it some as configuring sound under Linux is a 
mess.  Even if the volume levels aren't right, you can get decent 
results by playing with the software volume levels.  A Line In port 
would be better, but the software drivers don't always (in my 
experience) agree with the etchings on the outside of the case about 
which input is which.  If you're trying to digitize sound, you might 
need to use some strange settings.  To do that on my system I had to 
enable all 3 of Line In, Capture, and DAC.
