> If a user in LDAP has a large group membership list (90 in one case), su from root fails with no error message. If nsswitch.conf is changed to not look at LDAP, the su succeeds. Running PAM in debug mode shows the PAM stack succeeding, opening a session for the user, and then immediately closing the sesssion. FTP and ssh have child panics when this user attempts to login.

glibc used to have a bug that caused this;  is your glibc old?
