[KLUG Members] NTFS mount/nonmount

Very interesting. I just installed Fedora Core 3 on my eMachine (dual
boot with W98). I plugged in my Maxtor external HDD to the USB-1 port
and got very different results than I get with my Mandrake 10.1 on the
little Sony:

The FAT32 partition that I had trouble getting access to on the
Mandrake popped right up on my desktop with no issues. The ext3
partition also came up nicely. And Fedora reads them (mounted on the USB
device). But the NTFS partition won't read or mount--error message says
ntfs not supported by the kernal. Same message comes when I try to mount
it from the command line.

On the other hand, the W98 FAT partition (on a separate HDD in the
eMachine) needs to be manually mounted--it doesn't even appear in the
User Mount Tool that comes up with Disk Management (tho it does appear
in the Hardware Browser). It does manually mount, but seemed to
disappear again when I logged on (without shutting down the machine) to
mundane user. When I su'd to root, it also did not show up with the
mount command.

On a different note:
I copied the contents of my old home directory back to the eMachine
from the Maxtor and evolution mail not only recognized all the old mail
but even picked up all of my mail account settings.
