I use logwatch to monitor system state and activity over various intervals
http://www2.logwatch.org:81/. Logwatch presumes the changes you want to
track have been legitimately applied to a reasonably configured system. That
is, logwatch presumes you know how to setup logging and that you want
logwatch to automatically generate reports for you. If this is not the case,
then you are more interested in an IDS system like Tripwire.
