Happy New Years to all,

On my home computer I had some trouble when I tried to upgrade Suse 9.1
Personal to Suse 9.2. I tried just upgrade installed components. That didn't
work. Suse tried to get to run level 5 but there was no X installed. I
switched to another consol and ran YAST2 in the non-gui mode. This time I
did a full upgrade to 9.2. This seemed to work just fine. But, when I needed
to grab some pictures off our digital camera I had to install a bunch of
graphics packages. After doing this I was able to download and upload
pictures, but the next time I booted the machine, the keyboard and mouse did
not function as usual.

>From the desktop I could use my mouse to open any panel app, but when I
opened a consol, the key presses were all wrong. When I tried to shut the
box down by clicking on the Suse logo, the cursor focus would very rapidly
flicker from the bottom to the top of the menu. I could not get the mouse
focus on the logout selection. Rather than kill the X server with
Ctrl-Alt-Bkspace, I tried to use the keyboard. I pushed the Windows key to
try to raise the menu over the Suse logo. This took me to a login prompt on
tty6. Suddenly the keyboard worked fine. I was able to log in, run Midnight
Commander and log back out. When I did an alt-F7 to go back to the gui the
keyboard and mouse now worked as they should. The next boot I got the same
behavior in the gui until I went to a different consol and logged in.

Before I wipe the partition and do a fresh install of 9.2, I thought I would
ask if anyone had any ideas on what is going on here, and how I might fix
this strange keyboard and mouse behavior.

Regards,

Bob
