Mark,

Doing a backup of a partition on this machine is not a problem. This is an
old Compaq that I use to learn at home. I have GRUB setup so that I can boot
to other Linux distro partitions with no problems, and I have never had any
problems booting from CD to Knoppix, BBC, Devil Linux, etc. No other distro
has had the X keyboard problem, but this was my first Suse upgrade. My
inclination was to blow away the partition and do a fresh install of Suse
9.2 Pro too, but last night I think I found the missing clue.

After booting to a screwed up X, I found a stdout message on tty1 that the
service kbd had failed to start in run level 5. Thus whenever I did a
consol login to runlevel 3 on another tty the service kbd was run. This
would temporarily “fix” the keyboard problem in X. Once I had a working X, I
ran SAX2 and found that the keyboard that had been selected during the
upgrade from Suse 9.1 Personal to Suse 9.2 Pro was a PC 102 keyboard not the
actual Compaq Internet keyboard. I changed this in SAX2 and restarted the
computer. No more keyboard problems and the mouse is behaving.

The only remaining problem with Suse 9.2 Pro is that when I select shutdown
computer from the logout screen, after I reach run level 0, I have to hold
the power button in for 5 seconds for the computer to power off. When I was
running Suse 9.1 Personal I only had to press the button to power down.

Regards,

Bob
