I ended up getting one of these: http://www.lexar.com/mp3/LDP600.html
The main reason I picked that one is because it has a feature I've never
seen in any other sold state (cheap) MP3 player. A FM _transmitter_.
Since I listen to MP3's a LOT in my car, it's a neat feature that will
work on any radio. And much to my surprise, the transmitter works GREAT
(in my car anyway, YMMV).

The only (minor IMO) problems I've found so far are:

1) It doesn't pick up where you left off (after a power cycle) when
playing from a SD card. (Internal memory resumes correctly).

2) It's slightly more problematic in Linux that other flash drives.
On my desktop, I had to turn off SUBFS and mount it manually.
My laptop seems to work correctly with SMBFS (auto hotplug mounts).

3) The manual is extremely lacking. It doesn't explain any of the
setup options, and there are a couple items I don't understand what they
are talking about. OTOH, Lexar has online tech support where you can
chat with a tech in real time. Tried it once and it works fine in
Firefox/Linux (after a long wait for a tech to become available).

I also considered this model: http://www.lexar.com/mp3/jg_mp3.html
And I probably would have bought one if I owned any Lexar flash drives.
That's a neat concept (IMO), and a very inexpensive player.

So far I'm quite impressed with Lexar MP3 players.
