I have an external drive that has both firewire and USB connectors.
I've never actually benchmarked it, but my gut feeling is the firewire
feels faster to me.  That may have to do with Linux drivers, chipsets,
or who knows what.  I've never tried it on any other OS.  And I haven't
even tried it with a recent Linux distro.  (YMMV, FWIW, ... :)

I don't even know if there are different controller chip-sets.
