[KLUG Members] Saving to and reading an unmounted drive?

Having just done an rsync to /MAXext3 and opened the resulting files, I
tried umount to unmount it. I got this message:

umount: /MAXext3 is not mounted (according to mtab)

I get the same result when I try to unmount /MaxtorFAT.  
(both partitions on an external Maxtor HDD (USB).  

Can I just trust this message and go ahead and pull the plug on the
drive?
