It's a mark left in paper during production to identify the
manufacturer. You'll find them in some higher quality papers by holding
it up to the light. The term has come to be used in desktop publishing
to refer to a faint background image printed to appear behind the main
text and other elements in a document. It also refers to technologies
used to embed identifying information in graphic images as a form of IP
protection.
