Make sure you get a nice recent version that supports compression,
otherwise the latency makes it pretty slow.  

I regularly VNC over a
Me<---->11Mbps<---->768Kbps<-->Internet<-->1.5Mbps<--->1000Mbps<---->512/256Kbps<--->100Mbps<--->Them 
series of hops and it is quite usable;  although remoteing IE is always
a challange since it has problems painting the screen without the 'page
area'.   Every other app works fine.

Tunnel over SSH.  Compress the VNC connection (called "tight" VNC
sometimes).  You can compress the SSH tunnel but it is less effective.
