It should give you the option, just as the DVD/CD's do.

You just answered your own question!  :-)

I'd backup everything first, then try an upgrade.  
If it fails, start over with a fresh install.

Or save yourself the time and just backup & install.
I haven't had very good luck with upgrading SuSE.
