Jabber, more or less.  One can add an entity (a user or anything else
hooked to jabber) to one's roster and know the entities availability
assuming said entity bothers to set their mode: available, away,
do-not-disturb, unavailable, etc...

Ick.  And even a real database would be a polling request unless you
implemented a back-channel method (not to hard, you can make SOAP calls,
etc... via stored procedures in PostgreSQL, DB2, Informix and possibly
others).  Jabber however is just naturally live.
