Stating the truth is not a flame, IMO.  :-)

I don't know anything about KDE Kontact, but I'm sure you can find
examples of "cobbled together" suites in every OS.

Take a look at the basic Unix/Linux command line as an example.  
I bet the guy who wrote "dd" didn't write "ls" (or much else).  ;-)
