[KLUG Members] Courier IMAP / vmailmgr issues with newer versions?

I'm working on getting courier imap to work with vmailmgr.

the version of vmailmgr on the system I'm setting up is identical to a
another server, which works.

The version of courier imap I'm installing is far NEWER: 4.0.3 vs. 1.3.11 .

I've followed the vmailmgr/courier imap setup to the letter, *except*
where the very old HOWTOs differ from the newer versions of courier-imap
(for example, there's no imapd.config file, only imapd). I've changed
AUTHMODULES to include "authvmailmgr" in front.

The 4.0.3 version of courier uses authlib, which separates auth from the
imap setup. Fine. But it doesn't work.

I changed my version of courier-imap to 3.08 at the moment, with the
same problems.

Try to log in via IMAP: It sits for a few moments, then reports failure.

the vmailmgr logs (/var/log/vmailmgr/current) reports the daemon
starting, but not ever getting any connections.

My only thought is that in the newer versions of courier-imap, all the
necessary auth junk (plain, cram, etc) is built into the binary, and
therefore it doesn't want to reference other *binaries*, only modules in
the same binary.

If you've had this same problem, let me know - this is annoying. All
the googling in the world is coming up with the same HOWTOs with no real
answers, and NO real updated information.
