[KLUG Members] recording audio on gentoo

I'm trying to record some old cassettes into digital music (because I'm 
too cheap to buy the albums again) using Gentoo.  I have a Hercules 
GameTheater XP (cs46x driver, works fine) with line inputs that I can 
connect a tape source to.  I can play the tapes through the speakers, 
but all the recording software I've tried doesn't recognize that there's 
anything coming in the Line inputs.  I'm using alsa drivers, and OSS 
emulation is on although I don't think anything's trying to use it.  Any 
guesses what's wrong?

I've been using Linux exclusively on the desktop (viva Cedega!) for a 
couple months now, and I really don't want to backslide to Windows for 
this task.
