SuSE 10.0 was released this week, and I admit to being confused by the
different download options available. I've been talking to the SuSE
people in Germany on their mailing list, and I think I understand it
now. Here is what I learned:

The 5 CD set ISO images are available from novell.com and opensuse.org
both, but they are NOT identical. There is also a box set available for
purchase for about $60 list price. There are also "EVAL" DVD images
available for download.

First, the 5 CD set available from novell.com are _exactly_ the same CD
images that come in the $60 purchased boxed set. The 5 CD set available
from opensuse.org are missing all non-OSS (free) software. The missing
packages are: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tip/16015.html

The "EVAL" DVD is exactly the same as the 5 CD set packages combined.
It is 4.X GB, sized to fit on a normal single layer recordable DVD.
I believe the EVAL DVD is available from both novell and opensuse,
including and excluding the non-OSS packages. Many people on the
mailing list are complaining the name "EVAL" is misleading. I agree.

The DVD that comes in the boxed is a 9GB DVD, has both 32bit and 64bit
packages, and comes with some packages not available on the 5 CD set.
(and not on the EVAL DVD images). This is mostly development and some
server packages. I don't have a list. The extra packages in the DVD9
are available individually on the official FTP site, which can be made
an installation source in YAST, and installed post-installation.

I ask the SuSE people why they don't increase the number of CD's in the
set and include all packages in the CD set as are available on the DVD9.
The answer was it would take about 8+ CD's, and they reason they don't
do it is because of the extra cost of the CD's. (lame, IMO)

I have the 5 CD set and the EVAL DVD image downloaded from novell.com.
I'll add them to the KLUG CD sale page if anyone is interested.
