Missed this one... There ARE Ethernet cards for UPS's. Expensive, do not end up
supporting as many details as Serial / USB connections. But without servers to
spin down, what the Ethernet card can support is probably enough. You end up
getting all of the fancy battery stats, etc...

An interesting research would be in managing UPS's both with NUT and OpenNMS,
and seeing if both softwares can communicate with the UPS. Get the battery
issues to generate OpenNMS allerts and so forth.
