Unless your using source RPMs to build you just don't know.  When
building or running ./configure you are just expected to recognize all
those bits and be aware enough of the general LINUX/UNIX library
dependencies to spot what you are missing (like "Duh! crypto comes from
OpenSSL").  

It is frustrating at first,  but after something like ~10 years you get
a vague feel for what is going on. ;)

For those with fewer battle scars it can be useful to go to someplace
like findrpm.net and search for "libcrypto" to see in what packages it
pops up.  (Whenever you see something like "-lxml2" you are looking for
a file named "libxml2-{something}.so" and its corresponding header
files).
