I finally had a chance to try this: (a) it is *EASY* and (b) it *WORKS*.
I'll floored,  I've never seen Xine play anything, ever, other than the
coding-monkey-demo-video.  Now it plays DVDs (real commercial DVDs) with
menu navigation, full screen, and audio; the whole enchilada.

An "gxine" plays movies in something like a normal application window
shedding the very very very stupid, garish, and usability wreck of the
I-wanna-look-like-the-CD-player-in-the-dash-of-your-car effect.
