Eric,
	Thanks very much for the direction. In your archived post I 
found a link 
<http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_wrapper_install3.html> 
that helped me find this page which ultimately solved my problem. 
No you may not go straight there, you must follow their entry 
page and hunt for it. Maybe obviously to everyone out there but 
I'll expose my ignorance hoping to help someone in a similar 
situation. Make sure your printer is connected and on, don't let 
the !@#$%^&*() go to sleep! Onward to the scanner!
