I'm not sure either, it was part of Brothers sane driver installation
instructions.

What I get is a nothing on the command line and nothing on the
printer. At the command line it looks like a successful command, ie
the prompt and no error message.

The Success:

What I did do is "update" anything cups related with Yast. That would
be <software> <software management> and then the filter set to
<search> and all the boxes checked under <search in>. After several
failed attempts I deleted all installation sources, switched to cd
from dvd media, installed a new installation source, and was able to
update from cd. At this point I was able to access localhost:631 but
still
not able to print pages from any source. Then I pulled the printer
from the Belkin powered usb hub and plugged directly into the IBM port
replicators single usb. Everything works?!? Then I returned the
printer to a different port on the usb hub; it's plugged in Robert :);
and everything worked?!? I tried the a camera also plugged into the
hub in the different ports and it appears that the printer wants to be
plugged into the hub in a certain order different from before. I'm
assuming it wants the first port. It did work when I initially set it
up before my adventures deleting configuration files. I can still get
data from the camera even if the printer is hanging onto the other
port with the message "data remaining" displayed on the printer after
successfully printing. I also still do get the error message flashing
by; about an xsane error; when printing from Thunderbird. Printing is
successful as is scanning. So some hopefully small problems to deal with.
Thanks for your help, Robert and Raymond.

The remaining problem:

The scanner is not accessible after reboot. If I issue the command
mount /proc/bus/usb from root then all is well. A close watch on the
boot screen reveals that the above command is issued and fails because
no such ??? exists. Yet what appears to be the same command works from
a shell. Does that mean the boot command is being issued before it's
supposed to? So then I should be able to edit a file in /etc to
correct this?

Peter
