What you have is not a problem with fstab, but a
failure of your boot-manager (GrUB or LiLo) to install
properly. From direct (and multiple) experience, the
by-far-easiest work-around is to use GAGboot, either
temporarily (until you can fix the boot-manager
config-file) or permanently (as I have for most of the
last 5 years). It can be used or installed from
either a floppy or CD. Images of either can be
downloaded via:

I once used it to boot my system from a floppy for
nearly a year due to overlay issues with my hard
drive; it worked very well and REALLY made things much
easier!
