You can always check if a file is actually in use by doing a: "fuser -u
{filename}"

If OpenOffice is running you'll see a soffice.bin process.  You can
check for this at the command line with "ps ax | grep soffice" or
running the "GNOME System Monitor" (aka gtop).

Given this and your previous issue with gnucash I suspect that somewhere
along the line abnormal shutdowns are happening.
