O.K., I tried "whereis fam" on the box in question and got

fam: /usr/include/fam.h

I expected /usr/bin/fam or something similar. Should I assume it isn't
installed?

If so, will I need root access to install it?

BTW, uname -a reports: 2.6.14-1.1637_FC4, so it must be Fedora Core 4.

kind regards,
