I run all my networks as p-node (DWORD value 2). I figure if the WINS
server doesn't know about the name/value pair then the client doesn't
have any business knowing about it.

You can check your current value by looking at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System
\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\NodeType

If the value is not present and a WINS server is not specified the
system defaults to "1", if no value is specified and a WINS server is
specified it defaults to "8". A setting of "1" will almost certainly
not work.

"nbtstat -a {servername}" should work from the client if WINS is really
up and running.
