[KLUG Members] After adding IDE drive system doesn't boot

This may be more of a hardware question than a LINUX question.

I have an IBM x230 with a ServerRAID-4x 64-bit PCI controller. The
system boot and runs just fine. I purchased a Maxtor IDE 32-bit PCI
controller and a 250Gb ATAPI drive to use as a dump device. If I
install the card the machine boots fine, the card posts a message about
not installing "Ultra" BIOS because no drives are attached. If I
connect the ATAPI drive to the controller the system doesn't boot, it
posts all the normal messages and then goes to a blank screen with a
blinking cursor. Detaching the drive and the system boots again. I
assume this is because one of the many BIOSes (what is the plural of
BIOS?) is at loggerheads with one of the other ones (there is the BIOS
on the system board, the BIOS on the planar dual-bus SCSI controller,
the BIOS on the ServerRAID controller, and the BIOS on the IDE
controller... Ahhhhh!). Anyone know of any tricks to shuffle these
things around?
